Transportation systems provide a “high payoff” target for terrorists who want to inflict both an emotional and economic impact on a population. Another terrorist attack on our transportation system would have a significant effect on our nation’s ability to conduct commerce and run our government— and it would severely restrict personal mobility.
While airport security has been hardened over the years, we must remain vigilant to prevent an airplane from being used as a weapon. Daily, thousands of shipping containers come into our ports from all over the globe, and are later moved by truck or rail to all parts of our country. And each day more than 30 million people utilize our public transit systems.
This program is designed for first responders and highlights the uniqueness of the different transportation environments they may encounter: surface, maritime, and airports.
