In this telecourse, the viewer spends a day with the police chief of a mid-sized California city, following him from meeting to meeting, watching what it is like to meet the needs of the job on a daily basis. In addition, other chiefs and law enforcement professionals discuss the expectations placed on the chief and the tools required to meet these expectations successfully. Viewers also hear why some chiefs aspired to the job and how they prepared themselves for selection. Viewers learn the role of listening and team-building, the importance of communication, the value of having a clear vision for the department, the essential role played by command staff, and the keys to dealing with other city officials and department heads.
